I’ve always believed that the best roads lead somewhere unexpected.
Most Route 66 travellers race through Illinois — eager to reach Missouri, Oklahoma, the wide open Southwest. And I understand that pull. But if you do that, you’ll miss something that will genuinely stop you in your tracks. Something ancient. Something that makes you feel very small in the most beautiful way possible.
You’ll miss Garden of the Gods.
What Is Garden of the Gods?
Tucked deep inside the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, Garden of the Gods is a geological wonder that most Americans — let alone international visitors — have never heard of. And that is honestly their loss.
Ancient sandstone rock formations rise dramatically from the forested ridgeline, sculpted by 320 million years of wind, water, and time into shapes that feel almost intentional. Almost sacred. Names like Camel Rock, Anvil Rock, and Devil’s Smokestack give you a sense of what awaits — but nothing truly prepares you for standing on that ridge and looking out across the Shawnee Hills as the light shifts and the forest stretches endlessly below.

This is southern Illinois. And it is extraordinary.
The Observation Trail
The main Observation Trail is just under a mile long and relatively easy — making it accessible for most visitors. But don’t let the short distance fool you. Every turn reveals another formation more dramatic than the last. Bring your camera. Bring someone you love. Bring the patience to sit quietly on a sandstone ledge and just breathe.
Sunrise and sunset here are genuinely life-changing. The warm amber light catches the rock faces and turns everything golden. If you can time your visit for either — do it.
What To Know Before You Go
The site is managed by the US Forest Service and entry is free. There are basic facilities including a small campground nearby for those who want to wake up inside the forest itself — which I cannot recommend highly enough.
Spring and autumn are the most spectacular seasons — wildflowers carpet the forest floor in April and May, while October brings a blaze of colour that rivals anything New England has to offer.
Summer is beautiful but busy. Winter visits are quiet, dramatic, and surprisingly rewarding for those who don’t mind the cold.
